Acupuncture for gastrointestinal tract disorders
The gastrointestinal (G.I.) tract includes every organ and part of the body that are involved in digestion. It starts at the mouth where food enters the body, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and the anus.
The function of the GI tract is to process the food and liquids that we ingest to allow the assimilation of nutrients and fluids and the removal of waste.
What are G.I. tract disorders?
It includes disorders that can affect the digestion and absorption of nutrients. Among them we have conditions such as reflux, oesophagitis, gastritis, pancreatitis, dyspepsia, IBS etc.
These conditions can trigger symptoms such as constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
How can acupuncture help?
Research has proven that acupuncture can be beneficial for a variety GI tract diseases such as reflux, dyspepsia, gastritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Among the beneficial effects of acupuncture are the following:
- It improves movements in the stomach and intestines

- It reduces inflammation at different levels of the GI tract
- It reduces the permeability of the intestinal membrane
