How long is a session?

Sessions are generally 45 minutes to 1 hour long. Your first session will include a consultation in which information will be taken to establish a treatment plan, so allow 1 hour 30 minutes for this session.

How many sessions will I need and how frequent will they be?

Treatment is tailored to each individual, so the frequency and number of sessions will vary from person to person depending on your condition. In general, at least one or two sessions are required per week for the treatment to be beneficial. Some conditions may require more frequent visits while other conditions may only need one or two.

How safe is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is very safe when carried out by a qualified acupuncturist. Two surveys published in the British Medical Journal in 2001 concluded that the risk of serious adverse reaction to acupuncture is inferior to 1 in 10,000. More recent surveys found almost identical results.
For more information, see our “Is Acupuncture Safe?” page.

Does acupuncture hurt?

We use very fine pre-sterilised, single-use acupuncture needles that are so fine (15 times smaller than injection needles) that they are painless when inserted into the skin. Sometimes patients feel tingling or a feeling that energy is radiating from the needled point but this should not be painful. The majority of our patients describe the treatment as relaxing and pleasant.

What about confidentiality?

Any information collected will be dealt with in complete confidentiality and for the sole purpose of diagnosis and treatment. If the acupuncturist believes you should visit a doctor, he will tell you directly and will only contact your GP with your consent. However, if the acupuncturist would like to contact your GP because your health requires it and you refuse permission, he may refuse to treat you.

Am I covered with my health insurance policy?

Cyrille is a registered acupuncturist with the AFPA which means you can claim back the cost of treatment, depending on your level of cover, with the following providers: Vhi Healthcare, Hibernian Health (Aviva), Laya Healthcare and HSF. We provide every patient with a receipt after each session as proof that you have attended.

What if I can’t attend my session?

You may cancel or amend your appointment up to 24 hours before a session, but appointments cancelled less than 24 hours before will incur a charge of €20 to cover costs.
